Diabetes treatment costs continue to rise, what can be done?

25.04, 13:50 - 14:20 / Roundtables Room
Hosted by Toni Pakarinen

The majority of diabetes treatment occurs outside hospitals. Patients treat themselved at home, at work or anywhere else except at the doctor´s appointments.  At the same time, current diabetes management costs in Finland are €2,5 Billion per year, which corresponds to 15% of Finland’s total health care costs. During the past 10 years, costs have risen by more than 220% and over the next 10 years the cost is expected to rise by €4 Billion. A major challenge are additional diceases that are caused by inadequate diabetes management. In 2007, diabetes care costs amounted to 1.3 Billion per year, of which 800 Million was caused due to additional diseases. Approximately 30-40% of people with diabetes are subjects to these diabetes related illnesses and complications.

It is self-evident that diabetes treatment needs to be more efficient. How can technology and service design improve this?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) will create new opportunities for faster and better diagnosis and to identify more efficient care paths. It will support in healthcare customer service as well as in rehabilitation. Soon virtual personal assistants will advise us how to exercise, rest and eat based on our bio signals, genetics and daily schedule. Those companies owning valuable data for AI and excellent service design skills will have possibility to disrupt health and wellbeing business. Are you one of those? How to combine the strengths of human and AI? Which risks will AI bring along? What kind of obstacles may regulation create

From activity to health monitoring – what can be reliably tracked?

26.04, 12:10 - 12:40 / Roundtables Room
Hosted by Terja Koskenoja

The Kaleva Koru Roundtable is all about discussing the next level of self-measuring and monitoring – can wearables support us in e.g saving lives?

Today we use wearables to learn about our activity and stress levels, recovery times and get help on sleep-related problems – but could wearables be used 24/7 for health to prevent us from not getting treatment early enough. What is the health-related aspect that can be safely detected with wearables and health technology?

Could wearables help us identifying arrhythmia, blood sugar levels and thus help us get treatment? How reliable do the experts see the data to be?

Can blockchain and new digital trust break down health and wellness data silos?

25.04, 12:10 - 12:40 / Roundtables Room
Hosted by Antti Niskanen

Any ecosystem will operate more efficiently when relevant data is available to those who need it. Digital health is no different yet health data from electronic records and personal devices is scattered and its validity is not always known. What is needed to put the human in the centre and in control so that data can follow and act to the benefit of the one it pertains to? The discussion will explore these topics and envision necessary actions. The implications would be huge to the efficiency of healthcare and self-improvement.  The key is to enable trust in the validity of the data, auditability of actions and create useful services built on top. Blockchain technology promises to solve that. What is needed to make this a reality? What will such a future look like?

Defining workplace wellbeing 2.0 – our brains deserve just as much attention as our bodies

26.04, 11:20 - 11:50 / Roundtables Room
Hosted by Päivi Juolahti

As the nature of work is increasingly going more cognitive, rather than physical, we need to start paying more attention to our cognitive wellbeing. In an always-on world, a workday is no longer fixed to a certain time and place but, rather, work follows us more and more to home and free-time. Therefore, time and stress management during a day becomes increasingly important to allow our brains to recover. In addition to mental recovery, other lifestyle factors also play an important role in our holistic wellbeing, ranging from sleep and physical exercise to nutrition. What are the measures for employers to support employee health and wellbeing? What elements will workplace wellbeing 2.0 include?
